S. Bekker, Hermanus

S. Bekker, Hermanus, originally uploaded by Capelight.

I first noticed this wonderful general dealer store when passing through Hermanus in 1973. It was on the corner of Stemmet Street and the Main Road just a block away from the Marine Hotel. It was a wonderful example of a family store in the days before the branded supermarket came to town and made this type of shop redundant. I only took one photograph with my camera at the time. A year later when I returned to Hermanus to record it more carefully, it had been demolished! Using the photo I had taken in 1973, I finally brought “Bekkers” to light again in this painting which I have recently completed. I would be extremely interested if anyone knows anything more about the store and its owners.

Liberty, Hairdressing Salon, Salt River

Salt River,a workings man’s area in Victorian times is now full of soleless industrial buildings. Not the best part of town and the last time I went past there the salon was still in place but has lost it character.
